Two-owner 16,040 mile Shelby GT-H 4.6L V8 Automatic A/C Leather Documented
There was a time in the late 1960s when $17 a day would put you behind the wheel of a genuine Shelby GT350H. The folks at Hertz likely envisioned the cars leisurely cruising down coastal highways but, with 306 horsepower on tap, enthusiasts found more creative uses for them. There are endless tales of GT350Hs returning to the rental lot with worn tires, roll bar mounts and even entirely different engines. And, while it's hard to say how many of those stories are true, the 'Rent-A-Racer' name stuck, and Mustangs that survived rental duties are now worth a mint. To commemorate those legendary classics, Shelby created this car: the 2006 GT-H. One of just 500 produced, this retired rent-a-rarity traveled a mere 9,800 miles before being freshened up and retired to show duty. And today, it's some choice modern muscle that's documented, exclusive and an absolute blast to drive!
FORD BLACK AND HERTZ GOLD
The fifth-generation Mustang is considered some of Ford's best design work, and Hertz's GT-H livery takes those crowd-pleasing lines to a whole new level. After enduring star-studded rental days, this coupe's handsome Black Clearcoat was re-striped, professionally touched up and buffed to a beautiful shine. And, backed by a clean CARFAX Report, finish and panel fitment are factory-fresh.
While all that black and gold is enough to tell most enthusiasts everything they need to know, the GT-H further bolsters its pedigree through an excellent combination of Shelby and Ford Racing add-ons. At the front of the car, a Shelby fascia props a brushed aluminum grille behind a classic Pony badge. Behind that badge, stainless pins hold an aggressive hood, which flows to factory-tint glass that's branded with “SHELBY GT-H” lettering. Opposite that lettering, painted rockers frame polished Hertz emblems and traditional side scoops. And at the back of the car, a simple spoiler joins polished exhaust tips to frame bold “S H E L B Y” lettering, a second Pony badge and a small 40th Anniversary emblem.
STILL FAST!
Lift the hood and you'll find Ford's venerable 4.6 liter Mod Motor. Equipped with 24-valves and variably-timed overhead cams, these engines created a very respectable 300 horsepower straight from the factory. But, of course, nothing leaves Shelby Automobiles without healthy upgrades. For the GT-H, those upgrades come in the form of a Ford Racing Power Pack. For starters, the car's ECU is reflashed for a more aggressive timing curve. And then, breathing is made easy through a 90mm Cold Air Intake, freer-flowing mufflers and a Ford Racing X-pipe. The end result is a gain of roughly 25 horsepower and 10 lb./ft. of torque. Naturally, the engine fires up with ease, and sounds killer through the revised exhaust system. Billet GT-H caps and a GT-H dipstick dress things up a bit. And authenticity is ensured by a serialized Shelby plaque that rides the car's core support.
SPEED AND SUBSTANCE
Take a look under this Mustang and you'll find a solid modern chassis that's benefitted from numerous Shelby upgrades. Since all GT-Hs were used for actual rental duty, Ford's 5-speed automatic was standard fare. Behind that transmission, a rugged Ford 8.8-inch axle spins Shelby-installed 3.55 gears. That drivetrain rides Ford Racing's FR3 suspension, which wraps new dampers, new roll bars and stiffer springs in a 1.5-inch lower ride height. At the corners of the car, power-assisted calipers squeeze vented discs. Turns come courtesy of super-efficient power steering. Naturally, Ford's standard ABS and AdvanceTrac traction control systems are present and accounted for. And everything rolls on factory Ford blades, which spin 235/55ZR17 Pirelli P Zero Neros around locking lug nuts.
NICE AND SIMPLE
Between the doors, a Dark Charcoal leather interior frames “GT-H” branded buckets that feature 6-way power adjustment for the car's driver. In front of those seats, a silver-trimmed dash centers a small Shelby plaque between factory telemetry and crisp Shaker 500 audio. Shelby-themed floor mats float between Shelby-themed sills and a factory console that's centered on a factory shifter. Modern amenities abound, including power windows, power door locks, power mirrors and factory air conditioning. And the driver spins factory Cruise Control around a standard tilting column.
