----------

One of the many great things about the muscle car era was the Detroit automakers ability to inject excitement and performance into EVERY model on their showroom floors. That translated to awesome ground pounding machines for virtually every buyer and a healthy list of go-fast options which allowed those buyers to specify whatever combination of equipment they wanted. Take, for example, this 1968 Plymouth GTX. Dressed in a unique bronze on black color combination, and rocking a 6 BBL-fed, 440 cubic inch Super Commando V8, it's the kind of car you can take to the local strip to beat up crosstown rivals, or take on an everyday grocery run. If you're in the market for an investment grade MoPar muscle car that'll provide years of fond memories and continue gaining value, this 1968 GTX is your ticket!

BODYWORK/TRIM

This stunning, 3-owner GTX is one of the finest MoPar muscle cars on the planet! Its complete rebuild began when Dale Wamsley of Just Metal Restorations meticulously stripped its solid original body down to bare metal and block sanded every facet into a smooth, consistent canvas. Once the car's factory accurate panels were fully prepped from beginning to end, a correct coat of Chrysler code M Turbine Bronze Metallic was expertly applied under correct Black side stripes and buffed to a brilliant wet-look shine. Take one look down the sides of this old school Plymouth and it becomes very apparent that its tough, slab-sided body has been straightened and finessed until it looks smoother and lines up better than anything that rolled out of a factory. Pull the car in to the sun and its glossy paint accurately reproduces Chrysler's unique bronze hue all the while protecting it under a tough and durable clearcoat shell. All that staring and comparing adds up to one super slick classic that wraps brutal performance and a high level of accuracy in classic lines with killer good looks.

With its impressive attention to detail, I suspect this GTX will be one of those classics that someone sees, falls in love with and buys right off the showroom floor. At the front of the car, a body-width chrome trimmed grille centers a silver “GTX” emblem between four clear headlights, a good-looking chrome bumper and clear, square parking lights. Above that grille, the car's smooth bronze hood, which wears two scoops that display subtle “440” emblems to would-be stoplight challengers, flows to like-new glass that's cleared by stainless wipers, shielded by chrome drip rails and framed in original stainless trim. Below that glass, stainless-trimmed body panels are detailed with round marker lamps, giant “GTX” scripts, traditional door handles and a pristine driver's mirror. And at the back of the car, an original anodized valence hangs a centered “Plymouth” script and chrome “GTX” emblem between elaborate taillights and clear reverse lamps and a second chrome bumper that perfectly complements polished stainless exhaust tips.

ENGINE

Fully detailed, covered in Plymouth Turquoise and wearing few miles since a complete rebuild, this slick Plymouth's 440 cubic inch Super Commando V8 is spectacular in every measurable way! At the top of the mill, retrofitted 6 BBL carburetion sips fuel through fresh stainless fluid lines while sucking oxygen through an attractive air cleaner. To keep authenticity in check, a correct, 4-barrel is included with the sale. At the base of those carbs, a high performance intake hosts a correct points distributor, which sequences fire through Autolite Professional plug wires. And at the sides of that intake, restored original exhaust manifolds send spent gases in to a great-sounding true-dual pipes. Cooling for the big engine is provided by the car's original, re-cored Chrysler radiator, which rides in front of a correct, 7-blade fan and an original fan shroud. And, like the engine itself, the car's Turbine Bronze Metallic engine bay is highly detailed and exceptionally impressive, from its correct master cylinder, rebuilt wiper motor and reproduction MoPar yellow cap battery to its correct hoses, correct clamps and reproduction Chrysler washer tank.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

This GTX definitely has the performance to back up its sinister good looks. Behind the big-bore engine you'll find the car's original, 18-spline A833 4-speed, which sends power to a correct Dana 60 Sure Grip that's stuffed with stout 3.54 gears. Naturally, the car's front torsion bar and rear leaf spring suspension has been completely restored and includes: a rebuilt manual steering system, new rear springs and new shocks at every wheel. 2.5-inch aluminized exhaust pipes send spent gases through an H-pipe crossover, 2-chamber turbo mufflers and traditional stainless tips. And at the corners of the chassis, factory discs and drums spin behind chrome Magnum 500 wheels and meaty 215/70 Turbo-Tech redline tires. The car's restored floors have been coated in the same Turbine Bronze Metallic that you'll find on both its exterior panels and inner fenders. And everything, from this Plymouth's clean stainless fuel tank to its fresh stainless chassis bolts, presents just as well as when it rolled out of the restoration shop.

INTERIOR

This Plymouth's fender tag says it was originally equipped with an S6X Black interior and, accordingly, that cockpit has been restored with a roster of reproduction parts. The rear bench and the front buckets seats are firm and, despite being traditional muscle car vinyl, feel much more upscale than most factory fodder. At the bottom of those seats, new black carpet props a correct Hurst shifter in the middle of a correct, chrome-trimmed console. The car's pristine, wood-trimmed dash hangs fully rebuilt gauges, which include an offset tachometer, beside an original, 2-watt Solid State radio that sports Chrysler's cool thumb-wheel knobs. In front of the driver, a restored, wood-rimmed steering wheel rides a rebuilt, original column. At the sides of the seats, correct door panels hang new armrests amid fresh stainless trim, new woodgrain applique and correct door frames. And behind the cockpit, a fully restored trunk props a full-size spare tire between a reproduction mat and a correct decklid decal.
