If you're a car enthusiast, you know all about the iconic empire built by Shelby's legendary Cobra. From six-figure originals to fiberglass replicas, the word “Cobra” can represent anything from a sinuous boulevard cruiser to a hardcore track star. With that in mind, every dynasty has a Sultan, and, for the Cobra, that Sultan is a classic like this never titled, 1 of 50 50th Anniversary Shelby. Commissioned and sequentially numbered by Shelby American of Las Vegas, Nevada, this all-aluminum beast combines storied heritage with killer looks, excellent build quality and unbeatable provenance. If you're searching for a fresh twist on an old favorite, forget about project cars pieced together from leftovers. And forget about sloppy replica builds that shame their fabled predecessors. Call your friends at RK Motors Charlotte and pick up this razor-sharp roadster. It's pristine, rare and ready to rock and roll!
HISTORY/CONDITION
In the summer of 1962, the Shelby Cobra took the sports car world by storm! In re-engineering an AC 'Ace' chassis to accept 289 cubic inches of Ford small block, Carroll Shelby had created a spry track monster that handily defeated proven hardware from Jaguar, Chevrolet, Porsche and Ferrari. Today, over 50 years later, the original CSX2000 is one of the most valuable cars ever produced. And, as a fitting tribute, Las Vegas's Shelby American decided to honor that icon with 50 sequentially numbered copies of this 50th Anniversary CSX8000 roadster.
The one major variable in the CSX8000 program was the choice of either a fiberglass or aluminum body. And, in the name of absolute authenticity, this car's would-be owners decided to spring for the $134,900 aluminum option. Speaking of those owners, a couple who were located outside of America, they decided to commission trusted Cobra experts DenBeste Motorsports to source an authentic iron powerplant and assemble the car. But then, when the time came for this classic to traverse the sea, importation duties proved completely illogical. The solution seemed simple: have DenBeste store the Cobra until it was no longer considered new and pay cheaper duties. Instead, the car eventually made its way to our impressive showroom. And now, one lucky collector has the exclusive opportunity to purchase a never titled, essentially brand new 1 of 50 50th Anniversary Shelby Cobra.
Beginning life as hand-assembled aluminum, CSX8965 was, as previously mentioned, assembled, prepped and sprayed at DenBeste Motorsports in Windsor, California. That sinister Shelby Black 2-stage was augmented with a silver grille, chrome tube bumpers, tinted visors and monochromatic, 50th Anniversary-exclusive badging. And today, rolling only 8 miles since its 2014 debut, this classy Cobra strikes a perfect balance between outrageous looks, serious performance and excellent attention to detail.
ENGINE
Twist the car's chrome hood ties and you'll find 289 cubic inches of cast iron V8 that builds on the aluminum body's theme of authenticity. Sourced, built and installed by the pros at DenBeste, this famous Ford mill is, like the rest of the car, new in virtually every regard. At the top of the bright blue block, a polished Shelby 50th Anniversary air cleaner marries wind with fuel that's supplied by black XRP hoses and a mean Holley carburetor. The resulting air/fuel mixture makes its way from an aluminum Cobra intake to Ford-spec heads, which prop a polished breather on familiar Shelby valve covers. When those heads flood the cylinders, an aftermarket distributor sequences fire between an MSD Blaster High Vibration coil and 8mm Shelby plug wires. As combustion is sparked, resultant gases are jettisoned through spotless shorty headers. That combustion's cooling is provided by a beefy aluminum radiator, which stores coolant in front of a large-diameter puller fan, a small Harrison overflow tank and a high-flow water pump. A proven Carter fuel pump, a Wilwood dual master cylinder, an Optima gel cell battery and a beefy Aviad oil pan ensure the high performance small block has endurance and longevity. And quality ancillary components, like a color-keyed dipstick, a Motorcraft voltage regulator and a reliable Echlin fuel regulator, give the impression that someone really sweated the details during this incredible roadster's build.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
One of the best things about buying a professionally built, Shelby-designed Cobra is the impressive hardware underneath. Fully sorted and completely detailed, the car's 3-inch, Drawn Over Mandrel frame and fully independent suspension are ready to hit the toughest track you can find. Behind the stalwart 289, a Tremec TKO 5-speed hangs an SFI-approved bellhousing opposite a Shelby-spec Dana 44 that's wrapped in “3.54 TRUETRAC” branded aluminum. 11-inch vented discs combine with dual-piston Shelby/Wilwood calipers to provide confidence-inspiring stops. Modern rack-and-pinion steering makes low speed parking almost as easy as high speed sweeps. Mandrel-bent exhaust aligns throaty turbo mufflers with polished stainless tips. Power meets the pavement via chrome-plated spokes and 205/65R15 Firestone Precision Sport radials. And everything, from the car's aluminum floors and Flow Management Systems shocks to its Goodridge hoses and 14-gallon fuel tank, is essentially brand new.
INTERIOR
Cobra interiors have always been simple, and this roadster's purist nature shines like a fresh coat of wax on its glossy black fenders. Firm bucket seats stretch tight SA Rosso leather between fresh Simpson safety harnesses. In front of those seats, a leather-wrapped dash founds an Auto Meter clock and requisite Stewart Warner telemetry between a chrome mirror, clean Shelby wiring and a locking glovebox. At the sides of that dash, lightweight doors hang more SA Rosso leather beneath small wind wings and traditional chrome handles. Below those doors, Mercedes Wine wool carpet frames simple hand controls in 50th Anniversary-exclusive floor mats. In front of the driver, a wood-rimmed steering wheel spins polished spokes around a 50th Anniversary-exclusive horn button. And behind the passengers, a surprisingly spacious trunk features a 50th Anniversary-exclusive mat.
