With prices of documented collector cars locked in a seemingly endless climb, many enthusiasts are beginning to rethink the old purist's adage of 'original is always better'. And smart hobbyists who like actually driving their vintage hardware are beginning to buy slick, fully sorted classics like this razor-sharp Mustang. After all, muscle cars were built to be seen and enjoyed on the open road, not garaged and dusted with an air compressor. And with 427 cubic inches of FE V8, a carefully massaged chassis and vicious red and black war paint, this incredible fastback will have you smiling and waving all day long! Looking for a unique road warrior that's as livable as it is lust worthy? With this awesome Ford, you won't even give the word “original” a second thought!
BODYWORK/TRIM
The beneficiary of an extensive, ground-up restoration, this slick '70s pony features a vivid layer of red pigment that's been sealed in glossy clear, highlighted with black racing stripes and trimmed in stylish Mach 1 bolt-ons. Take one look down the sides of the car's rock-solid body and it becomes very obvious that great care was taken to ensure every panel is aligned to better-than-factory standards. Step closer to that body's slick 2-stage and check out its straight and ripple-free surfaces, which are a product of both clean OEM sheetmetal and high quality replacement panels. Grab the pivotal pieces of that well-adjusted sheetmetal and experience the kind of excellent fit that's right at home reflecting a summertime car show. Then step back and admire one very well done resto-mod that's built to exacting specifications thanks to a great combination of skilled workmanship and first-rate finishing techniques.
ENGINE
Hoist this Mustang's snug-fitting hood and you'll find a tough, 427 cubic inch Ford V8 that's been fully balanced by Kernodles Automotive Service of Norfolk, Virginia. At the top of the big mill, a finned, Thunderbird-branded air filter funnels wind in to a coated Holley 750 Double Pumper. A resulting air/fuel mixture makes its way from an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake to Edelbrock Performer RPM heads, which hide under a familiar pair of finned valve covers. When those heads flood the cylinders, an aftermarket distributor sequences fire through pliable plug wires while a stout Comp cam shoots spent gases through Hooker Super Competition headers. The hot engine's cooling is provided by a Ron Davis radiator, which rides in front of two SPAL puller fans and a high quality Edelbrock water pump. Charge comes courtesy of a March pulley system, which spins a polished alternator opposite a polished AC compressor. And overall, the car's clean, Satin Black engine bay is very well done; featuring details like polished breathers, color-keyed fluid reservoirs and old school Autolite plumbing.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
At the bottom of this Ford, a freshened undercarriage houses solid, Satin Black floors that are mapped with carefully chosen upgrades. Behind the buff FE, a tough Tremec 5-speed twists a proven Ford 9-inch. That rear end rolls on what appears to be a TCI Torque Arm set-up, which is finished with modern coil-over-shocks. Opposite that clip, what appears to be a TCI front-half employs two more modern coil-over-shocks. Turns come courtesy of power rack-and-pinion steering. Stops are provided by power-assisted Wilwood calipers, which squeeze four drilled and slotted rotors. The aforementioned headers dump spent gases in to coated, large-diameter pipes, which employ a coated crossover and coated, dual-chamber mufflers. And power scorches the pavement through polished Boyd's wheels, which twist 245/40ZR18 Nitto NT555 Extreme ZRs in front of 285/40ZR18 Nitto NT555 Extreme ZRs.
INTERIOR
Behind the doors, a factory-style Deluxe interior features freshly re-covered seats and traditional wood applique that adds a little class to the car's race-inspired shell. Everything from the tight headliner to the “Mach 1” branded floor mats appears restoration-fresh. The dash loads rebuilt gauges over a direct-fit radio that commands two large Custom Autosound speakers. At the floor, a long Hurst shifter rides inside a stylish, hard-lined console. In front of the driver, a Rim Blow Steering Wheel spins thin spokes around a patriotic Mustang emblem. At the sides of the passengers, conservative door panels hide super cool Mustang puddle lamps. And behind the cockpit, a plush trunk features a plenty of space to haul trophies.
