Description

With prices of documented collector cars locked in a seemingly endless climb, many enthusiasts are beginning to rethink the old purists adage 'original is always better'. And smart hobbyists who want to actually drive their vintage hardware are beginning to buy slick, fully-sorted weekend cruisers like this clean Mustang GT. After all, these classics were built to be seen and enjoyed on the open road, not garaged and dusted with an air compressor. And with a fire-breathing 390 FE block that's centered in a restored fastback body, this vintage Ford will have you waving and smiling all day long! Looking for a reliable muscle car that'll make the most of your summer? Experience this awesome Mustang and you won't even give “original” a second thought!

Even though this coupe isn't a concours-restored, numbers-matching insurance liability, its sale does include a Deluxe Marti Auto Works Report. And, according to Kevin Marti, the car was bolted together at Ford's Dearborn assembly plant on December 6th of 1966 with the following equipment:

Take a glance at this Ford's glossy profile and you'll see what high quality craftsmanship truly looks like. A product of a complete cosmetic restoration that was performed by a dedicated group of Mustang enthusiasts, its solid body was stripped to bare metal, thoroughly reworked and transformed from a tired old mare into a thoroughbred cruiser. Once that intense labor resulted in good fit and finish, a smooth coat of Raven Black basecoat was sealed in a durable clearcoat shell, accented with straight GT stripes and buffed to a fantastic shine. And today, the car sits as one super sharp pony that's ready to turn heads for years to come.

Ford has always sweated the details on its flagship Mustang. And with its abundant brightwork, this fastback presents a professionally tailored appearance that goes far beyond nice paint and fresh decals. At the front of its body, a forward-tilted grille hangs a pristine, corralled pony and intricately detailed fog lights between wide-set parking lamps, a show-worthy bumper and aggressive, ridged fenders. At the top of that grille, a scalloped hood props a bright “FORD” script and small turn signal indicators in front of like-new glass, bright stainless trim and dulled stainless wipers. At the sides of that hood, traditional “GT” emblems perfectly complement arrow-straight rocker guards, new stainless fender trim, fresh Ford door handles and correct chrome mirrors. And at the back of the car, a stainless-trimmed valence hangs segmented tail lights and a highly detailed fuel filler between a centered “MUSTANG” script, a second show-worthy bumper, chrome-trimmed reverse lamps and quad-outlet exhaust tips.

Fortunately, this sinister coupe is a lot more than just a pretty body. Under the car's sculpted black hood you'll find a big, 390 cubic inch FE V8 that's been cleaned, detailed and completely rebuilt to factory specifications. As one of the hottest Mustang mills ever created, this highly regarded 4V block cranks out a conservatively rated 320 horsepower and runs every bit as good as its brilliant Ford Blue paint suggests. At the top of the smooth engine, a reliable 4-barrel carburetor rides under a correct, chrome-capped air cleaner that sucks wind through a single-snorkel, Ford Blue base. Below that carburetor, chrome, “Power By Ford” branded valve covers sit at the sides of a chrome-sleeved coil that shoots spark through a traditional points distributor and fresh Autolite Radio Resistance plug wires. Below those wires, proven, cast iron heads combine with fully restored exhaust manifolds to send spent gases into high performance, true-dual tail pipes. And in front of those manifolds, a satin black radiator circulates water through fresh hoses and traditional screw clamps. As you can see, this Ford's impressive engine bay has been carefully sprayed in a smooth coat of satin black paint. All the motor's proper ancillary components, from its fresh power brake booster and Autolite Sta-Ful battery to its vintage AC components and new stainless fuel lines, are present and accounted for. And this awesome Mustang, which is every bit as fast and potent as it was 46 years ago, is reliable and ready to hit the street!

As you can tell from our professional, high resolution photos, the bottom of this fully sorted pony is no stranger to the occasional rain event. Behind the car's first-class Ford block, a tough Toploader 4-speed drives a durable Ford 9-inch that's equipped with solid 3.00 gears. Holding that versatile drivetrain off the ground is a lucid factory suspension which, at some point, has been completely restored with OEM-grade equipment. Above that suspension, coated floorpans appear solid and show absolutely no signs of severe rust or weathering. At the ends of that floor, correct power steering combines with beefy air shocks and optional power front disc and rear drum brakes to make turning, rolling and stopping an absolute cinch. Inside those brakes, free-breathing, true-dual pipes shuttle spent gases from the aforementioned manifolds to powerful Flowmaster mufflers. And at the sides of that exhaust, attractive American Racing Torq Thrust IIs spin 205/55R16 BF Goodrich Radial T/As in front of 225/50R16 BF Goodrich Radial T/As.

Open this head-turner's doors and you'll find a fully restored cockpit that twists black carpet, white vinyl and bright stainless trim into an exceptionally attractive driving environment. The car's correct Parchment Décor front bucket and sport deck seats wear fresh, pleated covers between 2-piece lap belts and mirrored chrome hardware. In front of those seats, a like-new, dual-cowl dash hangs fully rebuilt gauges above controls for both the aforementioned air conditioning and a Custom Autosound radio. Below that radio, a stylish console anchors a traditional Hurst shifter on fresh black carpet that's protected by color-keyed, Mustang-branded floor mats. Opposite those mats, a stain-free headliner centers a narrow console between weather-free sun visors. In front of the driver, a gorgeous wood-rimmed steering wheel spins three chrome spokes around a “COBRA” branded centerpiece. At the sides of the passengers, layered door panels feature pristine stainless trim, clean silver inserts and bright chrome handles. And behind the cabin, a spotless trunk hides an attractive plaid mat beneath a proper jack and full-size spare tire.

There's simply nothing like keying up a legendary muscle car. The sound… The feeling at idle… The relentless surge of torque as you power through gears. It's very rare to find a well-executed restoration which carries an asking price of roughly half its original build, but this Mustang is exactly that. And if you're looking for some highly desirable muscle that'll provide years of weekend fun, this is your kind of car!
